Emerging data show the COVID-19 pandemic is amplifying socioeconomic disparities as the coronavirus advances across the country and the world. In this interactive conversation, three faculty researchers will discuss how they are making choices about data sources, research methods, and technologies to identify and address social disparities. They will consider how these choices as well as approaches to building relationships with marginalized and at-risk communities can shape research directed at addressing the impacts of COVID-19 across different populations. This presentation will be hosted by CDSS Associate Provost Jennifer Chayes, and featured speakers include:

  • Ziad Obermeyer, MD, is an Acting Associate Professor of Health Policy and Management. He is a physician and researcher who works at the intersection of machine learning and health.
  • Niloufar Salehi is an Assistant Professor at the School of Information, with an affiliated appointment in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. Her research interests are in social computing, participatory and critical design, and human-computer-interaction.
  • Sarah E. Vaughn is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Anthropology. Her primary field is the critical study of climate change and the ways in which it generates problem spaces and claims to expertise.

This event will be the second in a series of webinars hosted by Berkeley's Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society, and the Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS) in which we look at how Berkeley researchers are using computing and data science to inform pandemic response & recovery.

The discussion is part of a live, online video series, Berkeley Conversations: COVID-19, featuring Berkeley scholars from a range of disciplines.

Speaker(s)

Jennifer Chayes

Associate Provost, Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society, and Dean of the School of Information, UC Berkeley.

Jennifer Chayes is the Associate Provost of the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society, and the Dean of the School of Information at UC Berkeley. She is a professor in the departments of EECS, Mathematics, Statistics, and the School of Information. Before joining Berkeley, she was a Technical Fellow at Microsoft, where she was the founder and managing director of interdisciplinary Microsoft Research labs in New England, New York City, and Montreal. Chayes has received numerous awards for both leadership and scientific contributions, including the Anita Borg Institute Women of Vision Leadership Award, the John von Neumann Award of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and an honorary doctorate from Leiden University. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. Chayes’ research areas include phase transitions in computer science and structural and dynamical properties of networks including modeling and graph algorithms. Chayes is one of the inventors of the field of graphons, which are widely used for the machine learning of large-scale networks. Her recent work focuses on machine learning, including both theory and applications in cancer immunotherapy, ethical decision making, and climate change.
