Berkeley Lab recognizes Daniela Ushizima in 2018 "Women @ The Lab" Awards

BIDS Senior Fellow Dani Ushizima was recently recognized with Berkeley Lab's 2018 Women @ The Lab Award, which recognizes women working at LBL who demonstrate dedication, talent, STEM contributions, and commitment to the Lab’s mission. An awards ceremony was held on July 9, sponsored by the Women Scientists and Engineers Council and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office.

BIDS Data Science Fellow Kellie Ottoboni has been awarded the University of California Dissertation-Year Fellowship for 2018–2019. The award is open to doctoral students who have demonstrated strong potential for university teaching and research, leadership and academic service; with backgrounds, life experiences, and/or research interests that contribute to diversity.

Meeting the Modern Naturalists at the Digital Data in Biodiversity Conference

On June 3-6, 2018, I attended the Second Annual Digital Data in Biodiversity Research Conference, which brought together a complex culture of individuals who share a common mission of providing natural history data to the world. The attendees ranged from collection managers, curators, IT specialists, academic researchers, to funders. These 'modern naturalists' are obsessed with data and arming themselves to use this data to fight for our planet.
