BIDS Executive Director David Mongeau is stepping down this June to become the Founding Director of the new School of Data Science at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).
The new school will be the first of its kind in Texas, and a key component in UTSA’s phased, 10-year approach toward its development as a destination for producing highly skilled professionals in data science and analytics. UTSA is already recognized as a leader in cybersecurity, cloud computing and analytics, and is one of only a few universities in the nation — and the only Hispanic Serving Institution — to hold three National Center of Excellence designations from the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
"I'm grateful to David for his leadership of BIDS and delighted for him to develop a new data science initiative at The University of Texas at San Antonio," said Jennifer Chayes, associate provost of the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society at UC Berkeley. "We will miss David's many contributions to CDSS, including his skillful collaboration with partners across campus and beyond, and wish him all the best in his new endeavor."
David has been the Executive Director of BIDS since April 2018. “I will always consider my time working directly with the inspiring UC Berkeley faculty and researchers associated with BIDS as a privilege." While overseeing the Institute’s research, training, and outreach, David secured $20.5M from new contracts, grants, and gifts for data science education and research. Notably, he expanded collaboration at BIDS with industry partners, stood up three new competitive fellowship and training programs, and increased investment in the fulltime BIDS academic and research track employees. Most recently, David guided three successful efforts to increase impact in the State of California and nationally at the intersections of data science with global change, criminal justice, and access to data-centric careers for immigrants and refugees.
