Welcoming our newest cohort of BIDS interns

January 29, 2026

We are delighted to welcome six Berkeley students as interns for BIDS.

Our recently expanded team will welcome researchers and visitors to events on campus and at our AI Futures Lab, a partnership with UC Investments. Our collective goal is to bring people together, to facilitate conversations both during scheduled events and in the “corridors” between those presentations. BIDS interns will be integral to creating a welcoming space where people from different backgrounds and with different domain expertise can explore how to best leverage technology to benefit science and society.

Our interns will welcome the STRUDEL team and their contributor community on Tuesday, 10 February, and experts from across the UC system to the UC Open Summit on 22 and 23 April. They’ll host members of the Berkeley OSPO community at our monthly meetups, and scholars from around the world at the Cultural Analytics workshop on Multimodal Models for the Study of Culture.

We know that not everyone can attend all of our events, so we have specifically recruited interns who are interested in communicating the impact of open source software and collaborative working. Many have taken data science classes across campus and we’re looking forward to incorporating their interests and knowledge into our community discussions.

We’re delighted to have such interested and interesting members join our team here at BIDS. Please enjoy learning a little more about each of these students in their own words below, and we hope you get to meet them in person at one of our upcoming events.

Ankita Biyani: I’m interested in creating data-driven tools that turn complex, messy data into meaningful insights, especially at the intersection of education and fintech. At BIDS, I’m excited to collaborate with others, contribute to open-source initiatives, and support data-intensive research that drives impact!

Damo (Vincent) Gu: One of my passions is developing predictive models to drive analysis, with current experience in real estate analytics and the semiconductor industry. At BIDS, I hope to learn more from the diverse community of open-source developers while enhancing the reach of BIDS as a whole.

Yeonwoo Lee: I am greatly passionate about exploring how technology can foster connection and create human-centered innovation. By being a part of a thriving academic community such as BIDS, I hope to deepen my understanding of how open-source work is developed, shared, and deployed to drive change in both technological development and social impact.

Saumya Lohia: As a student at the Information School, I’m interested in the intersection of data, technology, and social impact, specifically in the healthcare and climate spheres. I’m excited to be at BIDS to learn from others in the field, collaborate with a supportive community, and explore how data science can be used to drive change!

Mia Salinas: I am interested in exploring the foundations of data science and applying technical skills to build better research tools. I am excited to be part of the collaborative culture at BIDS, learn from the team, and help drive the mission of open and transparent innovations!

Chenrong (Hazel) Zheng: I’m interested in learning how data science can be applied to economic studies and real world settings to create meaningful social impact, especially through the lens of product management. I feel incredibly lucky to be at BIDS and am excited to learn from such a brilliant community while contributing to our mission of open science. Excited for what's to come!
