Sophie Horiuchi (she/her) is a PhD student in Epidemiology at UC Berkeley. She is interested in social epidemiology and econometric methods to inform policies and practices that address the social determinants of health, with current research focused on the role of the social safety net in reducing child maltreatment. Sophie earned her BA in Public Health and MPH from UC Berkeley.  Prior to graduate school, she worked as a data analyst at Tracking California in sickle cell disease surveillance, where she developed an interest in leveraging large administrative datasets to inform public health decisions. Outside of academia, she enjoys windsurfing and sailing on the Bay, as well as spending time with her family.
