Lightcone Research Co-Lead

Dr. François Lanusse has been a tenured researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) since 2020, based at the CosmoStat laboratory (CNRS/CEA Paris-Saclay). He is a leader in statistical and AI methods for astrophysics, and has held leadership roles in major international collaborations, including the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC) and the LSST Informatics & Statistics Science Collaboration (ISSC). He received his PhD in cosmology and inverse problems from Université Paris-Saclay in 2015, then built interdisciplinary expertise in deep learning for cosmology as a postdoctoral researcher at Carnegie Mellon University (2015-2018) and UC Berkeley (2018-2019). From 2023 to 2024, while on leave from CNRS, he was an Associate Research Scientist at the Flatiron Institute in New York City, where he helped launch the Polymathic AI initiative. His current research focuses on bringing state-of-the-art AI to scientific applications, from the principled combination of physical models with generative AI, to agentic systems that accelerate scientific research, including his work co-leading Lightcone Research, an open source project for AI-assisted science.
