This is an exciting time for the Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS); as we embark in a new era within Berkeley's recently founded College of Computing, Data Science and Society, we are looking for a talented Executive Director to join our team and lead new initiatives and programs.
After a decade that shaped Berkeley's Data Science programs, we now have an opportunity to ask where we should go next. I started as Faculty director this year, joined by Professor Tim Tangherlini, a specialist in Scandinavian Languages who also started our new Center for Cultural Analytics. Together we bring complementary expertise that combines the natural sciences, the social sciences, the humanities and the arts, and at BIDS we'll lead new efforts where these perspectives can come together.
You can learn more about my own take on where BIDS will go here, and I encourage anyone interested in the position to read that document; a brief summary is that I plan to build on our traditions in open science, open source and interdisciplinary collaboration, for BIDS to be:
- A home at Berkeley for:
- Open Source, Open Science, Open Scholarship: including efforts in the open source scientific software community, partnering with libraries, research engineers and students, helping integrate open scholarship within the structure of academic rewards and incentives, and more.
- AI woven into science and society: a space for connecting the intellectual perspectives of scientific domains and social/human considerations in the creation and use of AI tools both in research and broad use across society.
- An interdisciplinary Community Hub where Computing, Data, Science and Society intersect: the Berkeley ecosystem is incredibly rich and goes beyond the university, including unique nearby resources such as Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Simons-Laufer Mathematics Research Institute, and more. BIDS will help catalyze connections both on- and off-campus across these resources.
We are looking for candidates who align with this vision and who would be excited to join us. If you have any questions regarding the position, please contact us; and you can find the job posting with all necessary application information here.
