BIDS Senior Research Data Scientist Karthik Ram and collaborators from the Center for Scientific Engagement and Collaboration (CSCCE), Lou Woodley and Camille Santistevan have received $2 M from NSF’s Pathways to Enable Open-Source Ecosystems (POSE) to launch a training program to help researchers grow sustainable ecosystems around their open source software, open data, and open hardware.
One would be hard-pressed to name any field of scientific endeavor that has not been impacted by open scholarship practices. While these practices have been gaining popularity and recognition over the years, it has been a challenge to ensure that the open products (data, code, software, and hardware) remain sustainable. The goal of this program is to train NSF-funded communities in becoming self-sustaining open-source ecosystems (OSE). Over the next two years, we will design and implement a multi-week training program to help producers of open-source products identify relevant OSE models to match their research needs, curate state-of-the-art practices for sustaining open-source products and grow a community of practice around open-source sustainability.
